Islamic Hijab – Understanding Modesty and Purdah in Islam

In a world that has turned modesty into a controversy, this small booklet offers something quietly powerful: clarity. Islamic Hijab by Majlisul Ulama of South Africa is a concise and carefully written guide to the Islamic understanding of modest dress, covering, and social conduct — rooted in classical scholarship and presented with directness and sincerity. Drawing from the Qur’an, Hadith, and traditional fiqh, this book presents hijab not as a cultural imposition or a political statement, but for what it truly is in Islam: an act of faith, a mark of dignity, and a natural expression of a complete Islamic way of life.

Why this book Islamic Hijab matters today

Few topics in contemporary Muslim life generate as much discussion — and as much confusion — as modesty, dress, and the role of women in Islam. Opinions come from every direction, and it can be genuinely difficult to find guidance that is grounded in knowledge rather than opinion.

This book does exactly that. Islamic Hijab explains the religious basis of covering with clarity and calm, helping readers understand the limits of awrah, the principles behind modest behavior, and the wisdom woven into these rulings by those who understood the Qur’an and Sunnah most deeply. Above all, it shows how hijab is not a rule in isolation — it is part of a coherent Islamic understanding of morality, self-respect, and the kind of society that nurtures real dignity.

What makes this book Islamic Hijab unique

This is not a book written to win an argument or wade into modern debate. Islamic Hijab is written for the reader who simply wants to know: what does Islam actually say, and why? Presented according to classical Hanafi scholarship, the booklet explains the rulings on hijab and conduct with a directness that more academic works often lack. There is no unnecessary complexity here — only clear, principled guidance that students, teachers, and everyday readers can understand, use, and share with confidence.

Author’s scholarly authority

Majlisul Ulama of South Africa has long been known for producing traditional Islamic booklets grounded in the Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the considered opinions of earlier scholars. Their work is shaped by classical Hanafi jurisprudence and a commitment to presenting Islamic teachings as they have always been understood — without compromise and without confusion. That same grounding gives this booklet its quiet authority: it does not speculate or soften, but presents the traditional position with honesty and care.
